ABOUT US
SSTiming timed their first race in 1999 at the Energade Triathlon
series. What was once a part-time job, is now a busy company with more than 150 races on our
calendar. The company is owned by Gertjie Harmse with a dedicated team of timekeepers and
part-time helpers.
In 2001, we introduced a high frequency (HF) chip technology
system and later, in 2006, we developed an UHF (ultrahigh frequency) timing system in
conjunction with local companies. At the time, UHF was used only for warehouse tagging and
this innovation opened doors to a new way of timing events. SSTiming placed UHF tags on
mountain bike boards and soon, this became the norm in timing MTB events in South Africa. As
the tags improved, the same concept was introduced to road-running events, triathlons and
road-cycling races.
In 2018, SSTiming started a joint venture with Finish Time. Using
their timing software, which was developed by Racetec, our pool of opportunities increased
dramatically. Although the covid-19 pandemic severely impacted our industry, thanks to the
development of a timekeeper’s app by Racetec, we now have more cost-effective options to
time events without using timing chips.
SSTiming, powered by Finish Time, operates from Vanderbijlpark in Gauteng but we travel all
over South Africa and throughout Africa and Mauritius, timing events such as Sani2C, Berg &
Bush, the SA road cycling champs, SA Triathlon champs, SA MTB champs and many more.
